Notching
Assignment of the notch
When assigning notches, you select both members that are to be notched. You can either invoke the function first and then select the members, or first select the members to be notched and then invoke the function. In either case the two members retain their lengths and are not automatically shortened or lengthened as in the "End notch" function.
Notch parameters
The overlapping/notching function has various parameters with which the notch can be influenced:
Side of the notch in member 1: With the "automatic" option the program decides automatically on which side the first member is notched. The side for the second member is determined accordingly. If both members have the same height and are aligned at the same elevation, the result is random. In unambiguous situations—one member is higher than the other—the program's automatic decision is always appropriate.
With "choice" the possible notch sides for the first selected member are shown and can be selected graphically. Right-click rejects the displayed side and shows the other side. Left-click selects the displayed member side.
The other options force the notch onto a specific member side.
Notch depth in member 1: The "halving" option creates notches of equal depth in both members; the penetration height of both members is accounted for equally in each member. With "choice" you receive an additional dialog after selecting the notch side in which you can enter the notch depth value for the first member. With "fixed depth" you enter the notch depth for the first selected member in the following field. In this case the notch depth is predetermined.
